Starting A New Job

A hand holds a pen, writing in a journal.

This post is for everyone who is looking for a new job or starting a new job. So I just want to say:

“Hey, so you just got a new job! Go you!”

I wrote the first draft of this on the day before I started my new job, which also happens to be a pretty serious career change. So, in my head I’m maybe overreacting a little bit, but I’m thinking something along the lines of: “New job = new career = new me = new life!”

Sometimes a new job means a promotion or even a lateral move to an area of greater interest. Or sometimes it means moving to a new company. But no matter how new or how different this job is, it’s so exciting to be experiencing new things and discovering the areas for growth and expanding your potential.

I’ve found that it’s useful to do some reflecting when big life events come your way. It not only acts as a compass to guide you moving forward, it also acts as a log so you can see how far you’ve grown when you reflect on your time in the new role.

One thing that helps focus my attention (and can kick my subconscious into problem-solving gear) is journaling. I wanted to think about a few journaling prompts that I could complete after my first day of working.

Questions to answer while journaling after your first day:

  • What were five wins from today?

  • What were five areas for opportunity?

  • What were five things you learned?

  • Who and what do you want to be at this company?

  • What are your priorities this week? Month? Year?

  • What are the company’s priorities this week? Month? Year?

It’s so exciting starting a new role. Make sure you maintain your momentum and build space to reflect on how much you grow and what you hope to accomplish and gain in your current chapter and the next.

Best of luck!
